Wow. That's really nifty. In South Africa, everyone spoke French. Lol.
4 months is a long time (at least for me being away from my family). How did it feel when you got back? I didn't know what to do. I was cold all the time, because of the heat over there. So weird.
Wow. How long was your tour? I mean, I was there for two weeks and I couldn't get used to the climate at all. It's hot as hell all day and freezing cold at night. I've heard some things about Northern Africa, none very good. South Africa must be completely different. During my weekends, I had like 8 hour breaks to travel. I visited Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, which were both absolutely beautiful. It's no secret that some parts of Africa are very poor and impoverished, but I guess I didn't see that.
I'm a Biology/Pre-Vet Major in college right now and I volunteered as a lion caretaker to get career experience for the job I wish to pursue later. I basically worked with the cubs and was a surrogate mother (aka scratching post and chew toy to test new teeth on) for two weeks. It was a very rewarding experience. I'm sure yours was too in a different way. I think whatever you were facing was scarier than lions anyway.
Like I said, I've never really met anyone else who's been there, so it's nice to get some insight from others who've actually been there and seen the problems that country is facing. Between the filth, poverty, disease, wildlife and habitat destruction, and of course, the civil and military problems. The only thing I really saw while in South Africa were the wildlife problems and some of the areas of living were very sub-standard. It's completely different from here. It was hard to adapt. Even harder when I got home.
Hey, I was reading your description and I was wondering what it was like for you in Africa. It must have been gnarly for sure. I was a Wildlife Volunteer in Kruger National Park, South Africa. I was there for two weeks working with lions. I haven't really met anyone else who has been there and I was wondering what it was like... well, being there with the military. My dad went to Guam and Mexico and, of course, Iraq, but never Africa. Sorry if I'm intruding but I find that country very interesting.
