Infantry Hand and Arm Signals

Here are 23 established hand and arm signals that you and your team can use to maintain stealth during airsoft games. All hand signals are passed back to the next member of the team immediately even if you know that the other members have already seen the signal. Each signal can be given with the left or right hand with a few minor exceptions.

"I'm Ready/Are You Ready"

What this signal for:

This hand signal is used when you are trying to get the attention of another member of your team or to let them know that you are ready to move, communicate, assault, etc.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is preformed by extending your arm above your head and waving it slightly back and forth in an arching motion.

"I Understand"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that you understand and will comply with the last command given, or that you have completed the task and are ready for the next task. This signal is oftenreferred to as the "thumbs up."

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by making a fist with the thumb pointed upward. A variation of this signal is to point the thumb down, which indicates that your situation is "not good."

"I Do Not Understand"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that you do not understand the last message, or that you cannot comply with the last command. This signal is also known as the "wave off."

How to preform this signal:

Formally, this signal is given by shielding your entire face with both hands, palms facing out. However, this is ridiculous to do because you cannot hold your weapon in your hands since, like several other hand and arm signals, it requires the use of both hands! A common variation of this signal is to use only one hand, palm facing out, and wave it left and right.

"Cease Fire / All Clear"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that everyone on your team must stop firing immediately!

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by placing a hand in front of your face, palm out, then wave up and down in front of your face.

"Move Out"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal is used to tell your team to begin movement forward.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by raising an arm straight up into the air and letting it fall forward. Often, the arm is only raised up from the elbow and dropped forward.

"Stop"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means your team should come to a halt, but that they may continue to move to protective cover. Do not confuse this with the hand signal "freeze!" With the "stop" signal , there is no known threat to the team.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by simply pushing a flattened palm toward the intended receiver.

"Freeze!"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means "DON'T MOVE." Don't step forward, speak, or even turn your head to look for cover. This signal indicates that danger is very close, or that enemy contact is very likely. Do not over use this signal, it should only be used when necessary, not when you simply want your team to stop.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by making a quick fist with the palm facing outward. Do not wave the fist erratically, just simply hold your hand level and continue to make it until your team understands the command.

"Get Down"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that your team should get closer to the ground so that they cannot be seen easily.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by pushing a flattened palm toward the ground.

"Get Up"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that your team should stand up and prepare to move out.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by pushing a flattened palm toward the sky.

"Increase Your Interval"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that you would like to have more space between the members of your team or between separate teams. This signal is often given when your team is passing from heavy vegetation to lighter vegetation, or onto an open space such as a road.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by raising your hands above your head and moving them away from each other in a pushing manner.

"Decrease Your Interval"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that you would like to have your team move closer together, or "tighten up." This signal is often given when your team enters heavy vegetation, or just beforecrossing an obstacle, or before attaching an enemy position.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by raising your hands above your head and moving them toward each other in a squeezing manner.

"Column File Formation"

What this signal is used for:

The hand signal means that you would like your team to form a single line formation, in a follow-the-leader fashion.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by raising an arm straight up in the air, and making a backward circle as if you were doing a one armed backstroke. It is the exact opposite of the "move out" signal.

"Wedge Formation"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that your team should assume the inverted "V" formation and prepare to attack.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by raising straightened arms up slightly from your hips so that you arms form the shape of an inverted "V."

"Online Formation"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that your teams should quickly move up to the right and left of the leader. This signal is often given before attacking an enemy position, or when making a hasty line of defence.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by raising straighten arms up to shoulder level creating a large letter T with you body.

"Danger Area"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that there is a dangerous area up ahead- typically indicating open areas such as roads, or an area lacking cover.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by using a flattened hand back and forth across the neck in a cutting fashion.

"Patrol Leader Forward"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that the team leader needs to come to the front of the formation.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by tapping your forehead twice softly. Variations of this include tapping your chest several times for the squad leaders, or your in thigh for a fire team leader.

"Security Team Forward"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that the designated security team should move up to the front of the formation.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by pointing your index and middle fingers just under your eyes in a "I am watching you" manner.

"Rally On Me"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that your team needs to come to your position and form a tight circular security.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by raising your a straightened arm directly above your head and with stiffened fingers, make short circles.

"Rally Point"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that a designated location (something your team can remember like a large rock, or tree) that the team will rally at if necessary in the near future. This command should be given after every main terrain feature or ever 300 meters.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is done by making short circles directly above your head and then pointing at the rally point. NOTE: This in one of those few signals that are not passed down through the team. Only as each troop passes the rally point, do they repeat the signal.

"Double Time"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that the team must increase their speed to a slow run.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by raising a fist up in the air, with elbow bent, then pulling down in sharp, rapid succession.

"Quick Time"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that your team should slow down to a walking pace. This signal is almost always given at the end of a period of running or "double time."

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by extending an arm straight out from the shoulder and then waving the hand up and down, palm facing down.

"Prepare for Action"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that your team needs to expect enemy contact in a given direction. This is often given when suspicious voices or troop movement is heard. This is NOT an order to begin firing! The source of the sounds have not been identified as certain, if it had been, the "Enemy in sight" signal would be given.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by quickly punching a fist several times in the direction you believe the enemy is located.

"Enemy in Sight"

What this signal is used for:

This hand signal means that you have visual contact with the enemy. This signal is ONLY for confirmed visual contact with the enemy.

How to preform this signal:

This signal is given by making a fist with the thumb pointing down and the index finger pointed in the direction of the enemy contact. If you are a long distance away from the other members of your team you can raise your rifle above you head with the magazine skyward and the muzzle toward the enemy for bettervisibility.
