The UTG L-96 also know as the MK96 is an excellent entry system for the sniper.

Construction: Built just like the real 7.62mm sniper rifle the ABS stock of the MK96 is made of two halves bolted together over an aluminum frame. Weighing in at 8.5 lbs and measuring close to 4 feet long this sniper rifle is not light. Most of the weight is contributed to the high metal content of this rifle.

Metal parts include: barrel, receiver, bolt, bolt handle, safety switch, trigger, magazine release, magazine, front sling mount, rear sling mount, bi-pod quick release unit, bi-pod adapter and bi-pod.

Its real steel counterpart was made for extreme cold weather use so you will see on this airsoft version that it has an oversized bolt handle and trigger guard for use with heavy gloves. ( Excellent for Winter MIL-SIM), A trigger safety as well as a thumb safety is featured on the L-96. The center section of the trigger must be depressed in order for the main trigger to be pulled. This rifle was designed to be scoped so it is not equipped with iron sights. It features a 7.5 inch weaver rail along the top of the receiver for mounting a scope or red dot sight. I recomend the UTG Range Estimating Scope 4x32 with Full Size with AO & Mil-Dot Reticle ( Catalog Item# SCP-432AOMDTS). A nice feature is that the magazine has a spring loaded assist to help eject the magazine upon moving the magazine release lever. It also has a bi-pod quick release adapter. This railed adapter is pushed into the opening at the front of the stock and locks into place. With this adapter you can mount the included folding bi-pod or an optional rail mounting laser or flashlight. The cheek rest is adjustable in height and the stock can be adjusted in length by removing spacers under the rubber butt pad.

The Hop Up is adjusted with an allen wrench which is inserted into the magazine well just forward of the magazine release. I am working on a special knob that will allow the operator to do adjustments on the fly. I will keep all posted.

Performance: This is not your average sniper rifle. With a muzzle velocity of 460+ fps the L96 means business! With an adjustable Hop Up system that allows you to use several different weights of high polished BBs and a precision brass inner barrel the MK96 is capable of taking out a man sized target a 200 feet! Surprisingly the cocking effort is the same 25 lb pull as the M324 although the action is so smooth it feels even easier to cock the L-96.

Goodies: Included with the UTG MK96 are two 23 rd magazines, tri rail quick release bi-pod adapter, UTG weaver rail bi-pod, UTG speed loader and a sling. Get the scope and then you have a REAL SNIPER GUN...... And it looks hot..

When you compare this sniper to high cost Tanaka & Mauzaren, see the included features out of the box... then compare it's performance. The numbers will speak....Get this gun. If you want, you can install a tight bore barrel...and WOW.. take a true look at the FPS ! 25% velocity increase. I have made this system part of our teams armory.

UPDATE 01-02-2009
I chrono’d the gun and found it to be shooting 485 fps with .20 gram KSC Perfects.

Pro's : Fair Price look around for deals....
Great FPS.... 460 out of the box, Note may become a hot gun that maybe be banned in some fields.

Con's: Plastic trigger assembly
Bad location for hop up needs allen wrench for adjustments.
Crappy sling....Buy a better one or you may wind up with a damaged weapon.
Cheek Rest is of poor grade however can be corrected by some custom air-smithing.

Upgrades: Can be upgraded, better barrel, I hear there is a person who can make CNC machined trigger assemblies however. I'll keep you posted on that.

Hope this helps...

Interesting, about the BB's. I have been deployed and have been out of the "Airsoft Community" for awhile.

My CA M24 is shooting about 460 - 480 fps right now with the 300% spring. The original spring was a mind blowing, skin tearing 200 fps! When I upgraded the spring, I wasn't thinking and didn't upgrade the cocking knob. The original knob I think is pewter and because of the spring being so powerful, it "stripped" the knob.

i have the utg type 96 and i use a .3 bb. i havent upgrades yet but with a good lube job inside the bolt gets you to about 485 fps. i have the gun shoot in for a little over 300 ft. and i have taken shots at the max distance of 400 ft., but they just float there. airsoftatlanta.com is a the best place to get upgrades for they have a speacial tab for only type 96 parts. but with breakdown every 2-3 months depending on how much you play and relubing the internals, this gun will last for a very long time.
