airsoft mortar

i was thinking about butting some sort of hollow ball (maybe a wiffle ball) into a spud gun and firing to create a mortar effect. then i thought of maybe a closed ball with some sort of delay so it will open in mid air. but i couldn't figure out a way to get a delayed opening so i thought maybe cutting a hole into the side of a soda can and put some weight on that side so when it fires gravity will pull that side down (it will be loaded facing up) and dump bbs on people. anyone got any suggestions,improvements or better ideas?

I've tried to come up with similar ideas (Like a home-made Airsoft Rocket Launcher or Grenade Launcher) and they all end up with the same problem. Someone could get hurt.
